Our Story

Our Heart

At Multicultural Nelson Tasman, we believe a strong multicultural community is built on a bi-cultural foundation. That’s why Te Tiriti o Waitangi is central to our work—honouring its principles while welcoming and celebrating the many cultures that make our region home.

Our Vision

Te Tiriti-based communities live happily and in harmony.

Our Mission

We promote, celebrate, and strengthen our multicultural communities.

Our Story – Full History

How It All Began

Our story started in 1994, when a small group of visionary locals—many of us migrants—came together with support from the Department of Internal Affairs. We recognised the need for a space where newcomers, migrants, and former refugees could connect, be welcomed, and celebrate their identities.

In 1995, we officially incorporated as the Nelson Multi-Ethnic Council—our very first name.

Our Founders

We stand on the shoulders of our founding members: Marie Lindaya, Dr Siri and Soma Wettasinghe, Hein Kolff, Penny Molnar, and Dayanira Bakshi, among many others. These passionate people helped shape a more inclusive Nelson Tasman—supporting settlement, promoting cultural pride, and building positive race relations.

Early Milestones

• 1994: First community meeting, initiated by Internal Affairs and local migrants
• 1995: Incorporated as the Nelson Multi-Ethnic Council
• Late 1990s: Hosted the region’s first multicultural community events (Race Unity Day)
• Early 2000s: Launched settlement support networks and anti-racism resources
• 2013: Celebrated 20 years with national recognition and awards
• 2018: Marked 25 years with reflection on growth, belonging, and diversity
• 2024: Celebrated 30 years and moved into our new Multicultural Centre on Waimea Road

Growing Together

From small gatherings to large-scale festivals, we’ve grown into a leading voice for inclusion in Nelson Tasman. Our Multicultural Festival—now a major annual event—began as informal cultural sharing days. Over the years, we’ve expanded to offer workshops, newcomer support programmes, cross-cultural training, and advocacy initiatives, all grounded in our values of belonging, equity, and diversity.

Recognition

We’ve been honoured nationally for our impact—recognised by the Governor-General, supported by the Human Rights Commission, and celebrated by the communities we serve.
• 2021: National Partner of the Year – Neighbourhood Support
• 2022: Bowater Hyundai Community Impact Award – Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce Business Awards
